Lonhro leads the way at Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale

Topped by a $440,000 colt, Lonhro rounds out a big three days as the leading sire by average

Champion sire Lonhro finished Book One of the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne as the leading stallion by average. Highlighted by a $440,000 colt, Lonhro led the way with a healthy average of $300,000 for his four lots sold over the three-day session.

On the opening day, Exceed And Excel’s only lot, a colt from Yarraman Park Stud sold to Adrian Bott & Gai Waterhouse/Mount Hallowell Stud for $230,000.

Medaglia d’Oro had a successful day with Newhaven Park’s lot 105, a colt out of Shamardal’s winning mare Maxi Dress selling to Spirit Bloodstock for $160,000. Lot 421 from Hillside Thoroughbreds, a filly out of Classic Music who is the daughter of Champion sprinter Pipalong was purchased by Lindsay Park Racing for $180,000 and was another great result for Medaglia d'Oro.

On day two, Ricky Yiu went to $180,000 to secure a Denman colt out of Stakes-placed mare Papillon from the Blue Gum Farm draft. Denman’s good run continued with Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm’s lot 248, a colt out of winning mare Skidoodle selling to Ciaron Maher Bloodstock for $165,000.

Lonhro’s success continued on day two with Aquanita Racing securing lot 167, a colt from the Blue Gum Farm draft who is a brother to G3-placed Brockhoff for $440,000. This was followed by lot 283, a colt out of Tahnee Tango from Miburn Creek selling to Blue Sky Bloodstock Pty Ltd for $260,000.

Lonhro’s first yearling to go through the ring on day three was a filly from Blue Gum Farm out of unraced mare Chalonne, a three-parts sister to G2 winner Innovation Girl and dam of Group winner Incumbent, who sold to Neil Jenkinson for $250,000. Mick Price purchased Lonhro’s final lot of the day for $250,000, a filly out of Five Star Belle who is a half-sister to G1 winner Aragen, catalogued as lot 481 from Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm.

As always, the progeny of Street Boss proved popular with three of his yearlings making upwards of $160,000, including his top-priced colt out of My Choisir, offered by Swettenham Stud as lot 89 which sold to John Foote Bloodstock for $200,000.

Highlighted by two $160,000 colts, Epaulette’s first-crop yearlings were well received, with an average of $111,000 for his ten lots sold. Lot 383 from Hillside Thoroughbreds, a colt out of Blue Note (a half-sister to Champion colt Mentality) sold to Adrian Bott & Gai Waterhouse for $160,000, while lot 454 from the Musk Creek Farm draft, a colt out of winning mare Dubai Me Roses was purchased by D Adams for the same amount.

Helmet, who has already made a great impression on the track with his talented offpsring, had nine yearlings sell over the three-day period, topped by lot 282 from Basinghall Farm, a filly out of Symphony Miss who was bought by Phillip Stokes Racing Pty Ltd for $160,000.
