Medicinal delivers in G3 Ottawa Stakes

Brazen Beau youngster scores first Black-Type victory down the straight course at Flemington

Medicinal showed speed and tenacity on Saturday, 7 March when the Brazen Beau two-year-old filly scored a determined win in the G3 Ottawa Stakes over 1,000m at Flemington.

An emphatic Ballarat maiden winner on 22 February, after debuting with a 3.5-length sixth in the G2 Blue Diamond Prelude 1,100m for fillies at Caulfield on 7 February, Medicinal travelled kindly outside the leader down the straight before fighting hard over the final 200m.

The Ben, Will and J.D. Hayes-trained juvenile, ridden by Jamie Melham, beat Jadzia by three-quarters of length with Scintillation 1.25 lengths away in third place.

The Hayes stable could now be tempted to travel her to Sydney to target rich Stakes races over the autumn carnival.

Bred out of the Australian mare Tisane, Medicinal has an unraced three-year-old full-brother (Barley) also trained by the Hayes brothers, a yearling half-brother by Blue Point and foal half-brother by Native Trail.

Tisane, who is a daughter of G1 winner Camarena, was covered by Pinatubo last October.

Medicinal’s victory came just two weeks after a Stakes-winning double by the progeny of Brazen Beau, with Cinsault winning the G2 Millie Fox Stakes over 1,300m at Rosehill Gardens in Sydney and Power Beau taking the Listed City Of Marion Stakes 1,200m at Morphettville in Adelaide.

Brazen Beau was a dual G1 winner on the track who was Champion 3YO Colt in Australia in 2014-15.

The stallion has now sired 370 winners of 1,122 races worldwide, including 30 Stakes winners of 49 Black-Type events.
