Brazen Beau colt Diameter responded to a change in riding tactics and a step up in distance to break through at his fifth appearance in claiming the Listed Fernhill Mile at Randwick.

In a winning move, Diameter was sent forward from a wide draw under Tommy Berry and sat within striking distance of the leader.

Berry asked Diameter for his effort at the 400m and the two-year-old responded in kind to establish a clear advantage before scoring by a length.

Diameter had been previously placed at Black-Type level when third in the Listed Talindert Stakes over 1,000m at Flemington to start his autumn campaign.

Trainer Chris Waller, who prepared Brazen Beau for two G1 victories, was delighted Diameter opened the second day of The Championships in style.

“Brazen Beau, we know a bit about (the progeny) and (Diameter) has always shown us that he'll get a mile, so it gave us the confidence to press towards this race,” Waller said.

Bred out of the Street Cry mare Circular, Diameter is a half-brother to the G1 VRC Newmarket Handicap winner and now Darley stallion Cylinder.

Brazen Beau, who was crowned Australia’s champion 3YO colt in 2014-15, has now sired 376 winners of 1,135 races worldwide.

Diameter becomes Brazen Beau’s 31st individual Stakes winner, with his progeny collecting 50 Black-Type wins overall.
