Zapateo has inherited a stack of ability from her sire Brazen Beau and the Godolphin-trained mare showed a glimpse of it on Saturday, 18 March when she won the G3 Birthday Card Stakes over 1,200m at Rosehill Gardens.
Second-up after an unlucky, unplaced run in the G1 Oakleigh Plate in Melbourne, Zapateo travelled beautifully in fourth place in the Birthday Card before sprinting to the lead and beating Jal Lei and the early leader Hypothetical.
Zapateo (James McDonald), out of the Stakes-winning Australian mare Jerezana, won her fourth Stakes race and took her record to six wins and four placings from 15 starts for prize money of $691,550 for trainer James Cummings.
Brazen Beau was a dual G1 winner of the 2014 Coolmore Stud Stakes and the 2015 Newmarket Handicap at Flemington during his brilliant 12-start career.
He has 22 Stakes-race winners of 33 Black-Type races and his progeny have now won 629 races worldwide for prize money in excess of $25.6 million.
Brazen Beau’s daughters Exploring and Belsielle have won Stakes races in Melbourne and Hobart in recent weeks.
Lots by the stallion fetched to a high of $300,000 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne this month, and Brazen Beau has one lot in the catalogue for the 2023 Australian Easter Yearling Sale, which commences at Riverside Stables in Sydney on 3-4 April.
