You’re Canny too classy at Canberra

Canny Lad gelding wins the Listed Black Opal to become the 49th Stakes winner for his sire

After winning seven Stakes races the day prior, Canny Lad gelding You’re Canny took the tally to eight for the Darley stallions with a length-and-a-half victory in the Listed Black Opal at Canberra on March 13.

Jumping away cleanly from the gates and settling in behind the dominate favourite Kurata Queen, the Gratz Vella-trained You’re Canny set out after the leader as the field turned for home.

Winning the event in impressive fashion, the gelding has now won three of his four starts and in the process dented the reputation of the highly fancied G1 Golden Slipper aspirant Kurata Queen.

Bred by Anderson Thoroughbreds, You’re Canny is out of the G3-winning Palace Music mare Techniques. The mare has no current yearling, but has produced a Lonhro colt last year and was sent back to the 11-time G1-winning stallion again last season.

The sire of 21 G1 horses, Canny Lad was the winner of the G1 Golden Slipper and was ultimately crowned the Australian Champion two-year-old of his season.
