G1 quinella for Darley stallions

Lindermann and Pericles fight out epic Rosehill Guineas finish to give sires Lonhro and Street Boss feature race one-two

Lindermann and Pericles staged a two-horse war in the G1 Rosehill Guineas in Sydney on Saturday, 18 March to provide Darley stallions Lonhro  and Street Boss with a G1 quinella.

Lindermann, by the legendary Lonhro out of Australian mare Self Esteem, edged out Pericles (Street Boss) by a short half-head in the 2,000m classic for three-year-olds.

Williamsburg was three lengths away in third spot but no match for the first pair.

Jockey Nash Rawiller picked Lindermann off the canvas after Pericles raced to a narrow lead at the 200m mark.

Lindermann took his record to three wins and four placings from 11 starts, for prize money earnings of $719,800 for trainer Chris Waller and owner/breeder Debbie Kepitis.

Kepitis is the daughter of the late Bob Ingham, who together with his brother Jack were the “Chicken Kings” of Australia who created a racing empire.

The brothers established Crown Lodge and Woodlands Stud, where Lonhro was born and bred.

Asked what the Rosehill Guineas meant, a teary Kepitis said, “everything”.

“To have bred him, he nutted that out and we didn’t think he’d stay the two (2,000m),” she added.

“But what a win, what a win.”

Lonhro was a phenomenon on the track during a glittering 35-start career, winning 26 races - including an incredible 11 at G1 level.

He amassed $5,790,510 in prize money and has since sired 1000 winners of 3168 races worldwide.

Lonhro has 95 individual Stakes-race winners of 191 Black-Type races and his progeny have won more than A$147 million in prize money.

Although in the twilight of his great stud career, Lonhro also become a Champion Sire of sires with Impending, Pierro, Denman, Encryption and Exosphere just a few now at stud in Australia.

Lonhro has six lots in the catalogue for the Australian Easter Yearling Sale at Riverside Stables in Sydney on 3-4 April.
