War Heroine determined winner of G2 San Clemente Stakes

Daughter of Lonhro goes gate-to-wire to earn her first Graded Stakes win

War Heroine held off the late charge of Ollie’s Candy to win the G2 San Clemente Stakes by a long neck at Del Mar 21 July.

The San Clemente marked the first Graded Stakes win for the three-year-old daughter of Lonhro as she improved her record to four wins in seven career starts. War Heroine remains perfect in two starts on the turf.

Breaking alertly under jockey Tyler Baze, War Heroine took the lead right out of the gate, leading the field through swift opening fractions of 22.85 and 46.86. War Heroine continued to lead the way into the far turn, slightly increasing her advantage as the runners entered the homestretch. In the final furlong, War Heroine turned back rival Ms Bad Behavior and had enough left in the tank to hold off the late rally of Ollie’s Candy to win by a neck.

Bred in Kentucky by Waymore LLC, War Heroine is out of the War Chant mare, War Tigress, winner of the Caressing Handicap.

Lonhro has sired more than 160 individual winners in 16 countries during the 2017-2018 Australian season. Among them were Stakes winners in the United States, Canada, the UK and South Africa, as well as Australia.

Lonhro will begin the new southern hemisphere stud season in September at Kelvinside, NSW, at a fee of A$55,000, including GST.
