Sainthood too good in National Sprint

Two new Stakes winners in two days for leading third-season sire Lonhro

Consistent Lonhro four-year-old Sainthood took all before him in Sunday’s Listed National Sprint at Canberra, taking the event by a length. Having been scratched from a Stakes race at Warwick Farm on Saturday, the Rick Worthington-trained gelding settled off the pace before delivering a sustained burst of speed to take the 1400m event in fine fashion.

“All credit to the horse, that was a super hard race and he was well out of his grade but really stepped up and showed his class," Worthington said after the race.

"I've always had a huge opinion of the horse and for him to be putting it all together and winning races like this is just great."

Bred by International Thoroughbreds Bloodstock Investments, Sainthood is out of the city-winning Anabaa mare Bonne Famille. Passed in just shy of his reserve at the 2007 Inglis Premier yearling sale, the talented galloper found his way into the Worthington stable. Highlighting his faith in Sainthood, Worthington went to the sales this year and purchased the full-brother from the Magic Million yearling sale on the Gold Coast.

Having sired two new Stakes winners in two days, Lonhro has now sired nine individual Stakes winners of 14 Stakes races this season. After the postponement of yesterday’s G1 Australian Guineas at Flemington, Lonhro’s G1-winning colt Denman is set to reappear next Saturday in the rescheduled race.

Lonhro has 13 yearlings entered in the upcoming Inglis Easter yearling sale, due to commence on 6 April.
