Promising Denman filly claims maiden Black-type victory

Merriest becomes Denman's sixth individual Stakes winner

Three-year-old Denman filly Merriest raced away to claim her first Black-type win in the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes over 1200m at Moonee Valley on September 3.

In her second victory from just four career starts, Merriest raced one off the speed and benefited from the expertise of jockey Damien Oliver. Looking strong as they came around the bend, the filly refused to surrender and held on for a tenacious win.

The daughter of Denman was bred by Newhaven Park Stud and sold for $210,000 at the 2015 Magic Millions Yearling Sale. Her dam Merrier, also a Moonee Valley winner, has had three winners from as many runners, and is the descendant of G1 VRC Oaks winner Scomeld.

Merriest becomes the sixth individual Black-type winner for her sire Denman, joining the likes of Kuro, Law and Fitocracy.

Denman is standing the current breeding season at Kelvinside at a fee of $11,000 including GST, alongside his sire Lonhro who is standing at $88,000 including GST.
