Kuro shines in the Starlight Stakes

Leading son of Denman adds another Stakes victory to his name

Multiple Stakes winner Kuro who is a son of Denman has made a brilliant return to racing this preparation, showing great determination to fend off late challengers when adding a fourth Listed victory to his record in the Starlight Stakes over 1100m at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday December 3.

Kuro enjoyed a comfortable trip just off the speed and found himself in what appeared to be a commanding position as the field rounded the bend for home. Carrying his momentum into the straight, the talented son of Denman coupled his tenacity with a powerful turn of foot, proving too strong for the late challengers.

Bred by Nearco Stud, Kuro was subsequently sold for $170,000 at the 2013 New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale. The five-year-old gelding is a dual G1 placegetter in The Galaxy, as well as the Coolmore Stud Stakes behind fellow Darley sire Brazen Beau. Kuro is out of the Listed placed mare Distinctive Lass, who has three winners from as many runners, while his great grand dam Special was a three time G1 winner.

A superior speed horse who went undefeated short of a mile after his debut, Denman is a G1 winner of the Golden Rose Stakes who has consigned his talents to his progeny, including Kuro, Fitocracy, Law and Merriest.

Denman is standing the current breeding season at Kelvinside Stud at a fee of $11,000 (inc. GST), while fellow G1 winner Brazen Beau is standing at Northwood Park at a fee of $44,000 (inc. GST).
