Hurricane Henny to the fore at Rosehill

Henny Hughes gelding becomes his sires’ seventh southern hemisphere winner

Making his third trip to the races, two-year-old Henny Hughes gelding Hurricane Henny produced a tough effort to lead all the way at Rosehill, recording victory over 1800m on June 16.

Becoming the seventh individual two-year-old winner of the season for his mutliple G1-winning, record-breaking sire, the victory of Hurricane Henny has moved Henny Hughes into equal second position for the number of individual winners on the first-season sire table.

Bred by Wall Street Thoroughbreds, Hurricane Henny is out of the Sadler’s Wells mare Al Montahaa, a three-quarter sister to Anna Amalia, (dam of G1 winner Ave) and a half-sister to G3 winner Anna Palariva (dam of G3-winning, G1 placed Anna Salai). Also related to the triple G1-winning Exceed And Excel colt Helmet, Hurricane Henny was a $50,000 yearling purchase for syndication company Darby Bloodstock.

Hurricane Henny wasn’t the only two-year-old winner for the Darley stallions on June 16, with Lonhro colt Eight Straight winning the very next race on the Rosehill card, while Exceed And Excel gelding Flamberge remained unbeaten, recording his second race win with victory down the Flemington straight in Melbourne.

The sire of seven winners from 16 runners in Australia, including the Stakes performer Lil Red Corvette, Henny Hughes is also the sire of six Stakes winners in the northern hemisphere including G3 winners She Digs Me and Henny Hound, Stakes winner My Due Process and Fort Hughes, as well as the track record-breaking J C's Pride.

Standing the forthcoming southern hemisphere breeding season at a fee of $11,000 (inc. GST), Henny Hughes will stand alongside Lonhro ($110,000 (inc. GST) and Exceed And Excel ($66,000 (inc. GST)) at Darley's Kelvinside property.
