Frosted half-sister to sprint star Santa Ana Lane highlights weanling offerings

Stallions first Australian crop a major attraction at Magic Millions National Weanling Sale
Lot 727: Lot Filly by Frosted x Fast Fleet

The Australian sales career of outstanding American racehorse Frosted looks set for a substantial kick-start when his weanling half-sister to champion sprinter Santa Ana Lane goes through the sale ring this week.

Along with fellow Darley stallions Astern and Territories, Frosted will be represented by his first local draft at the Magic Millions National Weanling Sale beginning on Wednesday.

And if early interest is any indication, they will maintain the standard established by the first offerings in the United States of the stock of the champion miler.

Frosted’s first-crop weanlings made up to US$310,000 at Keeneland in November and he has also had yearlings sell for similar prices in the US in 2019, but none came with the credentials of Lot 727 at this week’s sale.

The filly from the Fastnet Rock mare Fast Fleet is a supplementary entry made by Aquis Farm and will be sold out of sequence following Lot 682 on Friday.

She is Fast Fleet’s seventh foal and is also closely related to Stakes winners in Western Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

But it is the prominence of five-time G1 winner Santa Ana Lane in her pedigree that makes the filly one of the sales’ more special offerings.

Frosted is also represented by a half-brother to the G1 New Zealand Derby winner Crown Prosecutor (Medaglia d’Oro).

The colt is out of the Exceed And Excel mare Riptide, a three-quarter sister to G2 Silver Slipper Stakes winner Headwater (Exceed And Excel), the family also featuring the Stakes-winning sprinters Kulgrinda, Cross Current, River Dove and Willow Creek.

Catalogued as Lot 454, he is a member of the Blue Gum Farm draft.

Territories, a G1-winning miler by Invincible Spirit from the family of Street Cry and Shamardal, gets off the mark with  Lot 307, a filly by Territories from Margherita (Encosta De Lago)

A half-sister to two winners, the filly is related to the good racehorse and sire Holy Roman Emperor, the Stakes-winning filly Milanova, as well as Fanfreleuche, one of the great producers of the thoroughbred world.

Astern, Darley’s other first-crop stallion to be represented at the National Weanling Sale, created a huge impression in a brief career that established him as the highest-rated son of his sire Medaglia d’Oro.

A G2 winner at two and at three the most dominant winner on record of the G1 Golden Rose, Astern has 17 weanlings catalogued, his offering including close relatives to G1 winners Charge Forward, Hurtle Myrtle, Flavour, New Approach and Brazilian Pulse.

Of those, his colt from the Dane Shadow mare Helsingor, offered by Kingstar Farm, has attracted plenty of pre-sale interest.

Helsingor is a three-quarter sister to G1 Myer Classic winner Hurtle Myrtle from a family that includes G1 Golden Slipper winner Star Watch.

Another popular at inspections has been Lot 402, Astern’s half-sister to the G1 Queensland Derby winner Sonntag from the Strategic mare Parfaits, consigned by Segenhoe Stud.

The filly’s second dam Ice Cream Sundae is a three-time stakes winner and dam of the G1-winning sprinter Flavour.

The first session of the three-day sale commences at 10am on Wednesday, 22 May.
