First G1 victory for flying Zapateo

Brazen Beau mare collects her sixth Stakes-race win in The Galaxy at Rosehill

Courageous Brazen Beau mare Zapateo was rewarded with her first G1 victory and the sixth Stakes win of her career when she finished fast to take The Galaxy over 1,100m on Saturday, 23 March at Rosehill Gardens.

Second-up after finishing runner-up in the G2 Challenge Stakes at Randwick two weeks earlier, Zapateo (Kerrin McEvoy) raced in fourth spot until straightening for the run home before grabbing the lead in the shadows of the post.

Zapateo, out of the Lonhro mare Jerezana, beat Sunshine In Paris by a head with Front Page a long head away in third place.

The James Cummings-trained mare stopped the clock on a fast 1 minute 2.95 seconds to record her eighth win, with nine placings, from 25 starts for prize money and bonus earnings of $1,740,250.

Brazen Beau was a dual G1 winner on the track and has now sired 292 winners of 809 races, including 26 Stakes winners of 44 Black-Type races.

Zapateo gave her sire his third Black-Type race win in the past month after flying Melbourne filly bold Bastille (Chloe In Paris) won both the Listed Redoute’s Choice Stakes (1,100m) at Caulfield and the Listed VRC Furphy Trophy (1,000m) at Flemington.

Brazen Beau has one filly in the catalogue for Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney on 7-8 April.
