Fifteenth Stakes winner for Lonhro

Consistent Pinwheel takes the Ramornie in fine style

Currently the leading third-season sire and looking a very likely top-three contender on the general sires table, 11-time G1 winner Lonhro was represented by his latest Stakes winner on Wednesday when Pinwheel recorded a length victory in Grafton’s Listed Ramornie Handicap.

A last start second placing behind boom sprinter Hay List in the G3 W.J. Healy Stakes at Eagle Farm, Pinwheel has been a model of consistency throughout his short career, recording six wins and six second placing’s from just 12 starts.

Ridden by the Melbourne-based Danny Nikolic, Pinwheel settled on the rails just off the pace, before making his run once the field rounded the home turn. In what was a dominant display, Pinwheel’s victory took his earnings past the $350,000 mark.

Bred by Woodlands Stud, Pinwheel is the first Stakes winner for his dam Quilt (Danehill) and comes from the family of G1 performers Charming City, West Point and Kenvain.

With 12 individual Stakes winners so far this season, Lonhro’s tally puts him just behind Redoute’s Choice who has achieved 14. Lonhro’s 12 Stakes winners have recorded 20 Stakes wins all up, more than any other stallion this season, quite an impressive achievement for a third-season sire.

Lonhro will stand the upcoming season at Kelvinside at a fee of $88,000, alongside with his recently announced G1-winning son Denman, who will stand his debut season at $38,500 including GST.
