As one of Australia’s oldest and most successful thoroughbred nurseries, Sledmere Stud has an illustrious history to maintain.

And according to Royston Murphy who owns and runs the farm with his wife Catriona, the 2019 Inglis Easter Sale gives them the chance to add to the farm’s standing with a consignment of 15 yearlings sired by some of Australia’s best sires.

Prominent among them is a pair of Darley-sired fillies by the sires-of-the-moment, Medaglia d’Oro and Exceed And Excel.

The Medaglia d’Oro filly, Lot 129 is offered by Sledmere on behalf of breeder Ralph Zito who also bred the recent All-Star Mile winner Mystic Journey.

Royston Murphy said the filly is the result of a lengthy and meticulously-planned series of matings.

“Her breeder describes her as the result of four generations of careful selection, he’s gone to great lengths to have her here at the sale,” Royston Murphy said.

“She has so much style and class, she has great action, she’s quite forward for a Medaglia d’Oro but still very progressive and she’s far more popular here in the lead-up to the sale than I expected.

“A lot of the Medaglia’s take a little bit of time, but she’s really progressed through her preparation.”

The filly is the first foal of the Statue Of Liberty mare Miss Steele, a winner at G3-level and is closely related to the G2 Chairman’s Handicap winner Steel Phoenix.

She has also arrived for sale at the ideal time with Medaglia d’Oro enjoying an outstanding run that was most recently boosted by the win of another of his fillies, Multaja, in the G3 PJ Bell Stakes at Randwick last Saturday.

Sledmere is also offering Lot 310, a filly by Exceed And Excel from the Stakes-winning Pins mare Tie Me Down on behalf of Little Avondale Stud in New Zealand.

Exceed And Excel enhanced his reputation as the world’s leading sire of Stakes-winning juveniles with a G1 and a G2 winner at Randwick last Saturday.

“This filly is out of a sire who is on fire at the moment, and one who consistently outperforms,” Murphy said.

“She a very nice first foal, she has very good depth through the girth, a really active walker, she uses herself really well.

“The Exceeds are entitled to be going through the roof this week, and she could be a very handy buy.”

The filly is related to G1 Australian Derby winner Levendi, the South Australian Oaks winner Tully Thunder G1 New Zealand Oaks runner-up Can’t Keeper Down and G1 New Zealand Oaks runner-up Can’t keeper Down.
