NEWS: Magic Millions marks generational shift among Darley stallions

Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale will include the passing of the torch from a global superstar on to his hugely promising son.

The catalogue features 16 yearlings by the great Medaglia d’Oro, from his final season of shuttling to Australia in 2017. At the other end of the spectrum, there are 23 yearlings from the first-crop of his son Astern.

Medaglia d’Oro is the sire of 871 winners worldwide including 25 at Group or Grade 1 level, with Astern, Flit, Crown Prosecutor and Vancouver winning elite races in Australia or New Zealand.

There is sure to be red-hot demand for this final crop of Australian yearlings.

Astern parades for a big crowd at Kelvinside this year.

Perhaps most notably, Lot 233 in the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale catalogue is very closely related to Medaglia d’Oro’s brilliant Golden Slipper-winning son Vancouver.

From the draft of Kenmore Lodge, the colt is out of Vancouver’s half-sister Delphi Lodge, by Fusaichi Pegasus.

Also a sister to the G1 winner Juste Momente and Listed winner Captain Coltish, Delphi Lodge is the dam of five winners from seven foals to race. Her High Chaparral son Newlands placed at Group 3 level in South Africa and also finished fourth in the Group 1 Cape Derby. Meanwhile, Lot 819 is out of the high-class Stratum mare Streama, who won 10 races including the G1 Australian Oaks, Flight Stakes, George Main Stakes and Doomben Cup. She also had five placings at the elite level.

Lot 173 is out of a full-sister to the G1 winner Royal Descent. This colt is out of a Redoute’s Choice mare – the same cross that produced this season’s Thousand Guineas winner Flit.

Lot 212 is out of a half-sister to the Golden Slipper winner Merlene and is also closely related fellow Slipper winner Capitalist, plus G1 winners Dear Demi and Miss Pennymoney.

At the same time as Medaglia d’Oro’s Gold Coast farewell, Astern will be making his yearling sale debut.

A brilliant winner of the G1 Golden Rose for Godolphin, Astern’s weanlings sold for up to $110,000 at the 2019 National Weanling Sale.

His Gold Coast yearlings include the well-related Lot 59, a half-brother to three individual black-type winners including this spring’s impressive G3 Thoroughbred Club Stakes winner California Zimbol.

Lot 620 is a half-sister to the G1 winner Sonntag, while Lot 710 comes from the same family as this season’s brilliant sprinting filly Libertini.

The 2020 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale commences on January 8th at 10.00am.
