Darley stallions: They win

September Run saluting in the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes

In Australia, the 2020/21 season celebrated the best sprinters in the country, unearthed many juvenile stars, and launched our industry front and centre onto the world stage when Australian racing was the only live sport during the pandemic.

We thought we would break down the season and highlight the Darley stallions' performance.

There were 75 G1 races totalling $92.76 million in prizemoney on offer across a range of distances from 1,000m to 3,200m.

Of that 75 G1s, nine G1s and $15,350,000 in prizmoney was won by the Darley stallions' progeny.

Or, 16.5 per cent of prizemoney and 12 per cent of G1s. As an owner, trainer or breeder, those are good odds.

The G1s won by Darley-sired G1 stars include the:

  1. Inglis Sires' Produce Stakes     Anamoe by Street Boss
  2. Coolmore Stud Stakes     September Run by Exceed And Excel
  3. Flight Stakes     Montefilia by Kermadec
  4. Spring Champion Stakes     Montefilia by Kermadec
  5. Melbourne Cup     Twilight Payment by Teofilo
  6. Winterbottom Stakes     Elite Street by Street Boss
  7. Canterbury Stakes     Savatiano by Street Cry
  8. Queensland Derby     Kukeracha by Night Of Thunder
  9. Darley Sprint Classic     Bivouac by Exceed And Excel
Montefilia became the only filly to win the Flight Stakes-Spring Champion Stakes, just seven days apart

At G2 and G3 level there were a combined 260 races, of those the Darley stallions' progeny saluted the judge 23 times or nine per cent, only slightly down the G1 figures.

Prizemoney on offer totalled $59,461,500, with $4,739,500 being secured by Darley-bred runners.

As we look further into black-type results, Brazen Beau's Midland took one of the 10 Restricted Listed races on offer to horses sold at public auction saluting in the Inglis Guineas. He has subsequently been sold to Hong Kong.

If the 2020/21 season breakdown and results, combined with brilliant new-season results following the eased down, one-length victory of Frosted's Ingratiating first-up in the G3 Vain Stakes for three-year-olds, is anything to go by, connections of the Darley-sired stars for 2021/22 have a stellar 12 months ahead of them.
