Athiri adds a brilliant Eagle Farm win to Lonhro’s list

Filly earns a start in $1 million feature with Brisbane Listed success

Athiri provided yet another example of the significance of Lonhro in the Australian breeding world when she scored a dominant victory in Saturday’s Listed Nudge Stakes at Eagle Farm.

A filly conceived when her sire was a mere teenager, Athiri is one of 90 Stakes winners for the 22-year-old Lonhro who carried his championship qualities as a racehorse to similar heights as a stallion, a role in which his winners-to-runners ratio runs at 72.5 per cent.

The win was Athiri’s fifth and her second in succession at Listed level and made her eligible to run in the $1 million Magic Millions Fillies and Mares at the Gold Coast on Saturday 16 January.

Athiri won on debut as a two-year-old, showing considerable talent in some of Australia’s best juvenile races, but she failed to add to that success at three.

At four, however, she has shown the benefit or patience and perseverance from her training team, winning four of her seven starts this season.

Athiri is a daughter of the winning Redoute’s Choice mare Retsina and is a half-sister to the multiple Stakes winner Savatiano (Street Cry).

Lonhro stood the 2020 southern hemisphere breeding season at Darley’s Kelvinside Stud in NSW.
