Athelric makes it four wins on the trot

Three-year-old son of Exceed And Excel earns first black-type win and becomes his 195th Stakes winner

Athelric took a giant step forward and provided Exceed And Excel with another Stakes winner on Saturday, 4 June when the three-year-old captured the Listed Queensland Day Stakes over 1,200m at Eagle Farm in Brisbane.

A dual winner at Warwick Farm in Sydney and at the Scone metropolitan meeting last month, Athelric scored his first black-type victory under jockey Hugh Bowman when he wore down Arentee in the shadows of the post.

Stablemate Ingratiating came from nearly last to grab third place on the fence after jumping poorly from the barriers.

Athelric, out of the Australian mare Ida, has two-year-old full brother (Northumbria) in training with Godolphin.

After improving his record to five wins and two placings from 14 starts for prize money earnings of $391,530, head trainer James Cummings said the gelding may stay in Brisbane for another rich sprint this month.

Exceed And Excel has sired more than 1640 individual winners - surpassing his sire Danehill and now has 195 Stakes winners worldwide.

Mr Stunning, Bivouac, Overreach, September Run, Microphone, Earthquake and Guelph are among his 16 individual G1 winners.

Exceed And Excel had 12 lots sell at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney last month for average of $345,000, including a colt out of G3 winner Tempt Me Not for $700,000.

He will stand at Darley’s Kelvinside property in the NSW Hunter Valley for a service fee of $132,000, including GST.
