Astern’s Stakes-class three-year-old honour roll escalates

Affaire A Suivre now a Stakes winner as Oaks looms at Morphettville.

Up-and-coming filly Affaire A Suivre could be given her chance against G1 company in the Australasian Oaks at the end of the month after the filly by Astern (AUS) raced away with the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1,800m) at Morphettville on Saturday, 15 April.

A previous start maiden winner at Cranbourne and having just her fifth start, Affaire A Suivre outstayed Running On Time by 1.25 lengths with Thirsty Guest another length away in third place.

The effort, with John Allen in the saddle, could be enough to persuade co-trainers Ciaron Maher and David Eustace to tackle the Oaks over 2,000m at the same track on 29 April.

Out of the US mare Laurelling, the dam of Listed 2021 Scone Cup winner Laure Me In, Affaire A Suivre was offered by Courtney and Miranda Howells of Ainsley Downs Stud at the 2021 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Yearling Sale and purchased by First Light Racing, Paul Willetts, Ciaron Maher Racing and David Eustace.

The filly became Astern’s fourth Stakes-winning three-year-old for the 2022/2023 racing season, joining an honour roll which includes; G1 Caulfield Guineas winner Golden Mile, dual G3 winner and G2 Arrowfield Sprint winner Aft Cabin and impressive G3 Typhoon Tracy Stakes winner Parisal.

Astern will stand the upcoming breeding season at Darley Australia’s Kelvinside farm in the NSW Hunter Valley.
