J J Grey made it two Stakes wins in a row after going wire-to-wire to win the $250,000 Iowa Derby by two lengths at Prairie Meadows on Saturday, 11 July.
The three-year-old colt by Street Boss entered the 8.5-furlong contest off a three-and-three-quarter length win in the Prairie Mile Stakes in his most recent start. J J Grey has now won five of his 10 career starts.
Breaking sharply under jockey Manny Esquivel, J J Grey went straight to the front to set the pace. He was soon joined by Bricklin (Nyquist) and the pair led the way through a moderate opening half-mile in :47.95.
J J Grey continued to hold a slight lead over Bricklin on the backstretch and through the far turn. He eventually shook free turning for home and began to widen his advantage in the stretch while under steady encouragement to win comfortably. The Hell We Did closed late to take second, with Maximum Effort (Maxfield) getting up for third.
J J Grey was bred in Kentucky by Dermot Carty and is out of Norquay, a multiple Stakes-placed daughter of Fairbanks. Norquay is a half sister to Graded Stakes-placed Lookinatamiracle (Lookin At Lucky) and to Stakes-placed Patty Come Home (Came Home).
Street Boss is the sire of four Australian G1 winners this season, with Tentyris, Pericles and Green Spaces joining Tempted as having success at the elite level. Worldwide, Street Boss has sired 90 individual Stakes winners.
