Watchme Win steals spotlight in G3 John Hawkes Stakes

Progressive son of Harry Angel opens Black-Type account at Morphettville to boost sire’s season record

Watchme Win continued his climb up the class ranks and provided Darley shuttle stallion Harry Angel (IRE) with another feature-race winner when the four-year-old captured the G3 John Hawkes Stakes over 1,100m at Morphettville on Saturday, 26 April.

Third-up from a spell and expertly ridden by Jason Holder, Watchme Win shot through along the fence at the top of the home straight before racing clear to beat Volcanic Express and Press Down.

It was Watchme Win’s first Black-Type success and lifted his race record to five wins and three placings from just 10 starts for prize-money and bonus earnings of $236,150.

Now trained by Andrew Gluyas at Morphettville, Watchme Win was bred by the Toorak Thoroughbred Breeding Trust and offered by Noorilim Park, Arcadia at the 2022 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale where Macdonald & Gluyas Racing outlaid $160,000.

Out of the Australian mare Watchmespin, Watchme Win is a half-brother to smart three-year-old Point And Shoot (by Blue Point), has a yearling full-sister and a weanling half-sister by Street Boss.

Easily the leading third-season sire in Australia, Harry Angel is currently in seventh place on the overall sires’ prize-money list this season – a remarkable feat as his oldest crop are only four-year-olds.

The former champion UK sprinter has already sired 199 winners of 444 races worldwide, including 19 Stakes-race winners of 30 Black-Type events.

Just last month, Harry Angel’s sons Private Harry (Happy Pilgrim) won the G1 The Galaxy 1,100m at Rosehill Gardens before Tom Kitten (Transfers) took the G1 All-Star Mile at Flemington.

A 50 per cent share in the unbeaten Private Harry was subsequently sold for $15 million, with the colt to be aimed at the $20 million The Everest 1,200m at Royal Randwick in October.

Harry Angel stood at Dalham Hall Stud in England this Northern Hemisphere season, but he’ll return to Kelvinside in the NSW Hunter Valley this spring to stand at $66,000, GST inclusive.
