Street Cry colt achieves southern hemisphere record

Always touted as one of the top colts of the sale, the Makybe-consigned lot 445 failed to let his supporters down.

By Street Cry, the sire of 13 international G1 winners and a half-brother to the seven-time G1 winner Makybe Diva, this colt had the pedigree and the looks to record an outstanding result.

While the bidding quickly rose to the $1million mark, Caulfield trainer Peter Moody was the last man standing so to speak, signing the docket for $1.2million.

"I've seen all her (Tugela) foals, barring Makybe Diva, and I thought he was the nicest one of her progeny that I'd seen go to a sale ring,” Moody told TVN.

Becoming the highest priced colt of the sale, and the highest priced yearling ever to sell in the southern hemisphere by his sire, the brown colt is out of the Riverman mare Tugela, who is also the dam of G2 winner Musket, G3 winner Valkyrie Diva and the Stakes placed Shadowofexcellence.

While this colt was the high point of a star studded draft for the sire, other top lots included lot 167, a chestnut half-brother to G1 winner Wanted that sold for $460,000, lot 411, a colt out of the G2 winner Street Smart that sold to the Hong Kong Jockey Club for $420,000 and lot 143, a filly out of the Hong Kong Derby winner Elegant Fashion that was knocked down to Apollo Ng for $330,000.

Recording an overall sale average of just shy of $300,000 for his 11 yearlings to sell, Street Cry ended the first session of the sale in third position on the leading sire table.
