More glory at Goodwood for Exceed And Excel

Heavy Metal takes the G2 Richmond in style to become his sire’s second Group winner of the week

Just two days after Bungle inthejungle outbattled his paternal half-brother Morawij to take the G3 Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, another of Exceed And Excel’s talented juveniles, Heavy Metal, recorded his first Group win at the same meeting when landing the G2 Richmond Stakes.

Prominent throughout, the Mark Johnston-trained colt (who runs in the colours of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum) took the lead two furlongs from home and ran on brilliantly to win by half a length from Master Of War, with Cay Verde a further two lengths back in third.

Bred by Darley, Heavy Metal is out of the G1-winning Champion juvenile Rock Opera, who has a 2012 colt by Cape Cross.

Exceed And Excel, Champion sire of juveniles in Australia and the world’s leading sire of two-year-olds, is also sire of four G1 winners to date (including one of Darley’s newest recruits, Helmet), and a further 14 individual Group winners.

Exceed And Excel stands at Kelvinside at a fee of $66,000 including GST.
