Khemosabi becomes 48th Stakes winner for sire

Commands gelding wins the Opunake Cup in New Zealand

Becoming the 48th Stakes winner for Commands, Khemosabi delivered a knockout blow when taking the Listed Opunake Cup over 1400m by five-and-a-quarter lengths in New Zealand on July 21.

Although jumping away from the gates as one of the outsiders of the field, the Paul Gordon-trained gelding took the step up to Stakes grade in his stride, winning with ease, and in the process he became the 44th Stakes winner from Commands’ 48, that are their dams best runner – quiet an achievement for the son of Danehill.

Bred by Swettenham Stud, Khemosabi is out of the G3-winning South African-bred mare Geordoba, and comes from the family of G1 winner Villandry. Currently in foal to Lonhro’s G1-winning son Denman, Geordoba is a very good producing mare, having had five to the races, all winners.

Standing the forthcoming breeding season at Darley Kelvinside for a fee of $55,000 (inc. GST), no stallion has recorded more individual winners to date this season than Commands. The sire of six individual G1 winners, Commands’ most recent winner at the elite level is the Champagne Stakes winner Skilled, who will stand his first season at stud this year at Darley’s Northwood Park at a fee of $8,800 (inc. GST).
