James Garfield strikes at Newbury

Son of Exceed And Excel lands the G3 Greenham Stakes

James Garfield, a three-year-old son of Exceed And Excel, made a winning seasonal debut on Saturday, 21 April when swooping late to land the G3 Greenham Stakes, a trial for the 2,000 Guineas. A high-class juvenile when winning the G2 Mill Reef Stakes over the same course, he was held up early before swooping late on the near side to defeat Expert Eye with Hey Gaman (New Approach) in a close third.

Owned and bred by W J and T C Gredley, he is one of five winners bred out of the Daylami mare Whazzat, a Stakes-winning juvenile in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot. From the family of Invincible Spirit, Whazzat also has a yearling colt by Golden Horn.

James Garfield is one of 142 Stakes winners sired by Exceed And Excel including this years Dubai Group winners Heavy Metal and Folkswood, and Australian Group-winning juvenile Performer. He will be covering this season at a fee of $82,500 Inc GST.
