Going Global

Already the dominant force in the first-season sires’ contest in Australia, Exceed And Excel sires his eleventh European winner, Godolphin’s Global City

Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation added its name to the ever-increasing list of winners by Exceed And Excel on two continents when Global City ran out the easy winner of a five-furlong (1000m) maiden at Yarmouth on Tuesday.

The colt, who was bred in Ireland by Monica Hackett, had shaped promisingly on debut a little over a fortnight earlier when runner-up at Beverley. A 12,000gns yearling, he was yet another pinhooking coup for shrewd operator Con Marnane of Bansha House Stables, who re-sold him for 200,000gns at Doncaster breeze-up sales in April.

A grandson of G1 Prix de Diane winner Lypharita, Global City is related to several winners, most notably the Listed-placed Sweet Afton. With just another week of the Australian racing season left to run, Exceed And Excel is poised to be crowned Champion freshman in his native country, while in Europe he is second in the first-season table behind his Darley counterpart Kheleyf, who is the sire of 17 winners.
