Excelling at the sales

Exceed And Excel and Shamardal enjoy superb session at Inglis Premier in Australia

Having topped Sunday's opening session of the Inglis Premier Sale when Gai Waterhouse went to A$380,000 to secure his colt from Oubladee, Exceed And Excel continued his outstanding week at the sales on 4 March when responsible for the highest-priced yearling ever sold at auction in Melbourne.

Consigned by Peter Liston's Three Bridges Thoroughbreds, the colt (pictured) from G3 winner Gentle Call was eventually bought by Darley Australia for A$750,000 - surpassing the previous record price by a staggering A$150,000. This was not Exceed And Excel's only major success of the day however, as his colt from Lost Valley was also bought by Darley for A$325,000 whilst Gai Waterhouse gave A$300,000 for a filly from G3 placegetter Happy Empress.

Exceed And Excel concluded Session one with 18 yearlings sold for an average of A$208,889.

There was also success for Shamardal, who maintained his position at the top of the first-season sires' table averaging A$114,000 for five yearlings sold. His top price came right at the start of the sale, when Patinack Farm bought his colt out of dual G1 winner Magical Miss for A$210,000.
