Cavalry Girl books G1 Moir Stakes tilt after Carlyon Stakes victory

Bivouac mare Cavalry Girl made it three straight in the G3 Carlyon Stakes, putting herself in contention for the G1 Moir Stakes

In-form mare Cavalry Girl has laid a platform to springboard into an early spring feature sprint with the best win of her career in the G3 Carlyon Stakes at Sandown.

Overcoming some anxious moments in the straight, Cavalry Girl capitalised on a late inside run to complete a hat-trick of wins and record her fourth victory from her past five starts.

Her recent run of form includes a Listed victory at Morphettville at the end of her three-year-old season.

Under jockey Craig Williams in the Carlyon, Cavalry Girl raced behind the leader in the 1,000m sprint but was held up for a run until inside the 200m.

Without leaving the rail, Cavalry Girl drove through before winning by half a length.

Cavalry Girl was a $110,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale purchase for Joe O’Neill’s Prime Thoroughbreds, with her earnings now standing at $520,000 from seven wins and four placings in 17 starts.

O’Neill is now daring to dream about G1 glory for Cavalry Girl, saying she had earned a place in the Moir Stakes, a weight-for-age test over the same course on Saturday, 5 September.

“I think we should be heading to the Moir now,” O’Neill said.

“This has been a good lead-in race to the Moir the past few years and I think she deserves a chance.

“She’s a very, very good racehorse. She wants to win and she’s got a great desire to win.”

Bivouac was crowned Australia’s Champion Second-Season Sire in 2025/26, with dual G1 winner Beiwacht and G1 Queensland Oaks winner Fireball Miss among the banner performers for the son of Exceed And Excel.

He stands at Darley Kelvinside in 2026 at $33,000 inc GST.
