Spirited Boss made it a successful raiding party for trainer Jose D’Angelo when rallying from last to win the G3 Monrovia Stakes for fillies and mares going about six-and-a-half furlongs on the hillside turf course at Santa Anita on Saturday, 4 April.
With Hall of Famer Mike Smith aboard, Spirited Boss (at 18-1) ran past pacesetter Amorita inside the final furlong to win by three-quarters of a length. Queen Maxima, the 4-5 favorite, finished another 1 ¼ lengths back in third.
A four-year-old filly by Street Boss, Spirited Boss is a homebred for Tag Stables. Her only previous Stakes victory came last year in the Sanibel Island Stakes on the turf at Gulfstream Park.
“This horse has been magnificent,” said Leonardo Paladala, D’Angel’s assistant. “(Santa Anita-based trainer) Peter Eurton suggested to Jose to bring this horse to Santa Anita for this stakes race. He was right. Mike Smith did the rest.”
Spirited Boss was bred in Florida and is out of the unraced Stormy Atlantic mare, Spirited Storm. Spirited Boss is a half sister to Graded Stakes-placed Uncaptured Spirit and Uncaptured Storm, and to the Stakes-placed Spirited Sol. She hails from the immediate family of Graded Stakes winners Slipstream, Porte Bonheur, Jack d’Or, and Intuition.
A son of Street Cry, Street Boss continues to build a global legacy, now the sire of 14 G1 winners worldwide. Renowned as the sire of nine-time G1 winner Anamoe, Street Boss has produced 1,074 winners of 3,263 races globally, including 88 individual Stakes winners responsible for 182 Black-Type victories.
