Street Sense dominates first-season sires

The history-maker continues to outshine all stallions in his category, recording sparkling averages across the board

As the second day of selling concluded at the 2011 Inglis Easter yearling sale, Street Cry’s finest son Street Sense continued to record positive results, achieving an average of $316,429, higher than any stallion with three or more to sell bar Redoute’s Choice.

With three individual lots selling during the second day, the highlight was the Widden Stud-consigned lot 341. A three-quarter brother to G1 Melbourne Cup and Dubai Australian Cup winner Shocking, this colt was knocked down to the trainer of Shocking, Mark Kavanagh for $450,000.

Earlier in the day Tim Martin Bloodstock purchased two yearlings by Street Sense, signing for lot 241, a filly out of the G1 winner Fine Society for $80,000 and also lot 244, the second foal of the multiple G1-performing Danehill mare Flora Danica for $350,000.

Fellow Darley first-season sire Bernardini (pictured) was also making his presence felt, with the Willow Park-consigned lot 225 realising $440,000 to UK-based J Warren. Out of the Royal Academy mare Dora Maar, this filly is a half-brother to Exceed And Excel Stakes winner Mrs Kipling and comes from the famed Twiglet family of G1 winners Fairy King Prawn and Easy Rocking.

Danehill’s dual G1-winning son Exceed And Excel recorded some very positive results on the second day, with colts making $260,000, $290,000 and $450,000, while two fillies sold for $260,000 and $430,000. One of the first lots through the ring, the Yarraman Park-consigned lot 186 was out of the G3-winning Royal Academy mare Charmview and was knocked down to James Harron Bloodstock / De Burgh Equine for $450,000. With two serious chances, Helmet and Exceed And Exalt, in this Saturday’s G1 Sires’ Produce Stakes at Randwick, it is no dobut the progeny of Exceed And Excel are hot property at present.

Selling continues on Thursday.
