Barely a week goes by where the versatility of Darley stallion Street Boss isn’t featured in Stakes race results and again it was the case at Randwick on Saturday, October 31.
If a horse personified that versatility, it’s Pericles, the upset winner of the $3 million G2 Russell Balding (1,300m), who won his ninth race and fifth at Stakes level in a record that also includes a G1 Futurity victory.
Pericles, who was ridden with a sit behind the speed by Dylan Gibbons in the undercard feature to the $10 million Golden Eagle in Sydney, took an inside run to put a margin of three quarters of a length over Headwall.
Caballus, a Bjorn Baker-trained stablemate of Pericles who set the tempo, finished third.
A seven-year-old Godolphin homebred gelding, Pericles won his first start, as a spring three-year-old, in September 2022 and since then he’s raced almost exclusively in Stakes grade and winning almost $9 million in prize money.
One of nine southern hemisphere-bred G1 winners by Street Boss, Pericles is a half-brother to G1-winning stallions Helmet and Epaulette and Group winners Pearls and Bullbars, being one of six winners for blue hen Accessories.
Also the sire of boom young Darley Australia-based multiple G1-winning stallions Anamoe and Tentyris among his 91 Stakes winners globally, Street Boss stands at Northwood Park at a fee of $66,000 (inc GST).
