Massaat makes winning return in G2 Betfred Hungerford Stakes

Son of Teofilo shows no sign of rust in winning his first start in over a year

Massaat made his first start in over a year a winning one when he charged to a one-and-three-quarter length victory in the G2 Betfred Hungerford Stakes at Newbury.

The four-year-old son of Teofilo, who had been sidelined due to an ankle chip, earned his first Stakes victory in the Hungerford. Prior to today’s victory, Massaat had second in both the G1 Dubai Dewhurst Stakes and G1 QIPCO Two Thousand Guineas.

Settled just off the pace by jockey Jim Crowley, Massaat tracked the leaders through the early stages of the race. He then took command with just over a furlong to go and cruised to an easy victory.

A Shadwell Stud homebred, Massaat is out of Madany, a winning daughter of Acclamation. Madany is a half-sister to multiple Stakes winner Zeiting, the dam of Combat Zone, Champion Older Horse in Italy, and Scottish (by Teofilo), winner of the G3 Strensall Stakes and second in the G1 Caulfield Cup.

Teofilo has sired 27 Stakes horses this season including impressive Australian G1 winner Humidor and dual G2 hero Permian. His four further G1 performers also include the Irish Classic pair Irishcorrespondent and Eziyra, winner of the G3 Give Thanks Stakes.
