Kermadec claims two Stakes winners in two weeks

The four-year-old shows grit and determination to beat off all challengers in Singapore Derby

Star galloper Lim’s Kosciuszko scored his first Stakes victory and gave his sire Kermadec a fifth Black-Type winner and his ninth Stakes race success when he scored a courageous victory on Sunday, 17 July in the Singapore Derby over 1,800m at Kranji racecourse.

Perfectly ridden by ex-Australian jockey Danny Beasley, Lim’s Kosciuszko sat behind the early leader Con Speranza before sprinting to the lead at the 200m pole and holding off the fast-finishing Relentless and Super Impact.

Out of the New Zealand mare Jacquetta, who was a winner of the Listed CJC Welcome Stakes over 1,000m in 2014, Lim’s Kosciuszko turned the tables on Relentless after his arch-rival had run him down in the dying stages of the Stewards’ Cup (1,600m) at Kranji three weeks earlier.

The Dan Meagher-trained four-year-old took his impressive record to nine wins and two placings from just 12 starts for prize money earnings of S$576,788 (A$607,145).

Kermadec was a dual G1 winner on the track and is also the sire of four-time G1 winner Montefilia and 2021 G1 VRC Oaks queen Willowy.

Exciting Kermadec three-year-old Gundec won the Listed Bendigo Guineas over 1,400m in April and the emerging Tuvalu captured the Listed Winter Championship Final over 1,600m at Flemington two weeks ago.

Tuvalu is considered a future G1 winner, having won seven and been placed at four of his only 11 starts.

Kermadec will stand this year at Darley’s Northwood Park stud in Victoria for a service fee of $16,500, GST inclusive.
