Hard Spun colt tops all in California

Two-year-old brings $220,000 at Barrett’s May sale

Just ten days after being represented by his first winner from his first crop of two-year-olds, Darley’s G1-winning stallion Hard Spun continues to make headlines siring the US$220,000 sale topper at Barrett’s May two-year-old sale in California.

Consigned by Ciaran Dunne’s Wavertree Stables, Inc., the colt is a half-brother to G1 Blue Grass Stakes winner Sinister Minister. His dam, a Stakes-winning daughter of The Prime Minister, is also a half to three Stakes winners, including G3 winner Prospector’s Flag.

Hard Spun’s first winner, the colt Mabroor, was an impressive three-quarter length winner on May 7 at Haydock in Great Britain. He sold for US$300,000 as a yearling at Keeneland and is onwed Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell Estate Company.

A powerful son of Danzig, G1 King's Bishop Stakes winner Hard Spun will cover his fourth Australian book of mares during the forthcoming breeding season at Northwood Park at a fee of $16,500 (inc GST). Covering the likes of G1 winners In Joyment and Reganza, plus the dams, siblings and daughters of a further 18 G1 winners in his first southern hemisphere season, the resulting progeny of Hard Spun's first Australian crop of two-year-olds are set to race in the latter part of 2011.
