Great mares honoured

Seachange and Tuesday Joy claim Horse of the Year awards in New Zealand and Australia

The awards season is in full swing and daughters of Carnegie and Cape Cross have been honoured at separate ceremonies on Thursday in NSW and New Zealand.

Tuesday Joy (pictured), the five-year-old mare by Carnegie out of Oaks winner Joie Denise (Danehill), was named NSW Champion Horse of the Year at the Racehorse Owners’ Association Racing Night of Champions at Royal Randwick.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse, Tuesday Joy won two of her three Group Ones this season, taking out the Ranvet Stakes on 9 April, which she followed up a fortnight later with victory in the BMW. She was also placed in both the G1 Chipping Norton Stakes and G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes. At three, she won the Coolmore Classic and was placed in the AJC Australian Oaks and the Victoria Oaks.

Seachange sealed a memorable career when fourth in the G1 Falmouth Stakes in the UK in July. She set sail for Dubai then England with seven Group One wins to her name in her native New Zealand. By Cape Cross, she is out of the Broad Reach mare Just Cruising, who died recently at The Oaks Stud in Cambridge, where Seachange is due to start her new role as broodmare for her owner/breeder Dick Karreman.

The Oaks Stud dominated the New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing Awards, winning five prizes in total. Seachange was voted Horse of the Year for the second time and Sprinter of the Year. Her dam was posthumously awarded the Broodmare of the Year title while Dick Karreman was also given the Mercedes Owner of the Year and Mercedes People’s Choice Award.
