Authorized is...Simply Awesome

The next chapter in the incredible success story of the 2007 Derby winner is about to be written as his first runners prepare to take to the track this season in Europe

The current European season is looking very promising for Authorized, with the first-crop of two-year-olds by the three-time G1 winner seemingly making a big impression on trainers in the northern hemisphere as their race day debuts become imminent.

Famed for his brilliant acceleration and higher rated at two than the leading Sadler’s Wells stallions Montjeu, Galileo and High Chaparral, Authorized broke his maiden as a two-year-old in the G1 Racing Post Trophy by one-and-three-quarter lengths, before returning for his Classic season to not only win the G1 Epsom Derby by five lengths, but defeat Dylan Thomas, Notnowcato and Duke Of Marmalade in the G1 Juddmonte International.

Although a G1-winning juvenile, it was his three-year-old season that allowed the son of Montjeu to legitimately stand out from his peers. On this basis, it is very pleasing to note that his first-crop of northern hemisphere-bred two-year-olds have gone into the stables of trainers that are capable of producing quality juveniles, but will also allow them the time that is required to get the best of them during their three-year-old season.

When a stallion has his stock in the stables of G1-producing trainers such as Henry Cecil, Luca Cumani, Andre Fabre, John Gosden, Richard Hannon, John Oxx, Jean-Claude Rouget, Sir Michael Stoute and Dermot Weld, one can be sure that he will have every chance of success.

Perhaps the trainer happiest to greet some of Authorized’s stock into his yard has been Peter Chapple-Hyam – for the simple reason that he was the man who had the pleasure of training Authorized throughout his career.  Amongst the myriad G1 winners which Chapple-Hyam has trained in the couple of decades since sending out Dr Devious to win the Derby and Rodrigo De Triano to win the 2,000 Guineas in the same season, Authorized holds a particular place in the trainer’s affections; and it is easy to discern the excitement in his voice when he discusses the prospects of the Authorized youngsters in his care.

Starting already to plan the careers of these two youngsters, Chapple-Hyam recently gave the opinion that, “I have two Authorized two-year-olds in my yard.  Both are fillies.  One filly is quite sharp and I really like her.  She should be out and running quite early.  The other filly will be for later in the year.  She has plenty of class and is doing everything right so far”.

Such thoughts seem to typify the general feeling among the trainers about the Authorized juveniles – which is no surprise, as most of them have the advantage of being from a high-class mare, as well as being sired by a champion.  Among those set potentially to make their debuts this year in the north are half-siblings to the G1 winners Scintillo, Count Dubois, Soldier Hollow, Zanzibar and Mus-If.

While in the southern hemisphere his first-crop of rising yearlings, are out of G1 and G2 winners My Brilliant Star, Pay My Bail, Almah and Dandify; the dams of G1 winners Shot Of Thunder and Yell; plus the siblings to G1 winners Neroli, Mossman, Mummify, Slight Chance and Rough Habit.

This is, of course, the quality of mare which you would have expected to be covered by the European Champion three-year-old. From the immediate family of the top-class stallions Green Dancer and Alhaarth, Authorized is also very closely related to the proven G1-performers Okawango, Quijano, Prospect Wells and Prospect Park – while more recently his family received a further boost from the tremendous campaign enjoyed in 2010 by Dubawi’s 2,000 Guineas-winning son Makfi, who will incidentally shuttle to New Zealand in the forthcoming breeding season for the first time.

Standing the forthcoming season at Darley Kelvinside at a fee of $22,000 (inc GST), Authorized clearly ticks all the boxes to be a success at stud.
