Medaglia d'Oro colt stamps himself as spring contender

Shards wins G3 Up And Coming Stakes in signal to spring riches

Medaglia d'Oro colt Shards looks set for a successful spring after he made it two wins from four starts in the G3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) at Randwick on August 22.

The Godolphin-owned three-year-old was resuming from a spell following a strong win in a two-year-old handicap at Rosehill on June 13. Stepping up to Group company for the first time, James McDonald had Shards settled in third, trailing a strong tempo, and proved too good for his rivals, sending the John O’Shea-trained colt on a possible path to the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill next month.

Shards is the second foal – and first to race – from Lonhro mare Shatters, a three-time city winner for Darley, who retains the mare. Shatters has a two-year-old Street Cry colt and is currently in foal to Exceed And Excel.

Medaglia d’Oro, sire of Golden Slipper hero Vancouver, stands at Kelvinside for $110,000 inc. GST.  Exceed And Excel will also stand at Kelvinside for $110,000 inc. GST.
