Darley stallions shine on Gold Coast

Street Cry one of several Darley sires in demand at Magic Millions yearling sale

As expected competition was extremely strong for the progeny of Street Cry at the Magic Millions yearling sale on the Gold Coast.

The sire of 15 G1 winners, Street Cry’s first New South Wales-bred crop produced G1 Caulfield Guineas winner Long John, while Chivalry, Memorial and Occitan are already impressive juvenile winners out of his next crop.

Street Cry had six yearlings sell on the Gold Coast at an average price of $243,333. The highest price was $400,000 paid by Medallion Thoroughbreds for the colt out of Listed winner Kakakakatie, sold as lot 489 by Baramul Stud.

Champion stallion Lonhro and his G1-winning son Denman also enjoyed great results. Lonhro was responsible for the fifth highest lot of the sale with his colt out of Stakes-winning Exceed And Excel juvenilie Noesis selling for $520,000. Bred on the same cross as Lonhro’s recent G1 winner Bounding, the colt was consigned by Willow Park Stud as lot 614 and purchased by Hong Kong’s Sun Bloodstock.

Denman had 15 yearlings sell at an average of $180,000 including a top price of $310,000 for lot 329, a colt out of Stakes winner Devil Inside. The colt was one of six Denman’s purchased by leading trainer Gai Waterhouse. The trainer of Denman’s first Stakes winner Law, Waterhouse spent $1.38million on Denman yearlings over the four-day sale, a clear indication of her opinion of him as a sire.

“I wouldn’t say he’s emerging; he’s emerged. He’s here with a vengeance. He’s got lovely individuals, they’re beautifully stamped, they’ve got lovely temperaments, and he’s doing it,” Waterhouse said.

Australia’s reigning Champion stallion Exceed And Excel had a half-brother to Stakes winner Al Dhafra from the draft of Burnewang North sell to Sun Bloodstock for $400,000 and a half-brother to Domesday’s G1 performer Divorces consigned by Evergreen Stud Farm sell to trainer Neville Parnham for $315,000.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club went to $375,000 to secure lot 451, a Commands colt consigned by Newgate Farm while lot 404 was a Commands colt sold by Murrulla Stud for $300,000.

Medaglia d'Oro averaged $232,500 for his two lots sold with Gai Waterhouse purchasing both, lot 606 was a filly out of Fantastic Light mare Mysterious Light purchased for $280,000 and lot 81, a half-brother to G1 winner Juste Momente for $185,000.

Bernardini was another Darley stallion with progeny in demand, selling three lots at an average of $171,667 including lot 252, a filly out of Stakes winner Bonifacio which was knocked down for $285,000.
