Bolt d’Oro sweeps to victory in G1 Del Mar Futurity

Juvenile colt becomes fifth G1 winner of the year for Medaglia d’Oro

Bolt d’Oro made his Stakes debut a winning one as he rallied from far back to take the G1 Del Mar Futurity by three-quarters of a length September 4.

Allowed to settle near the rear of the field through the early stages of the race, the two-year-old son of Medaglia d’Oro began a wide, sweeping move on the far turn, closing stoutly on the leaders. As the field hit the top of the stretch, Bolt d’Oro was up to challenge for the lead, then battled with Zatter through the stretch before pulling away late for the victory.

Bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm LLC, Bolt d’Oro was purchased by owner-trainer Mick Ruis for $630,000 at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga August Yearling sale. He is out of Globe Trot, a winning daughter of A.P. Indy who has also produced two-time Stakes winner and Multiple Graded Stakes-placed Sonic Mule (by Distorted Humor). Bolt d’Oro hails from the family of Multiple G1 winner Zensational and Multiple Graded Stakes winner, Departing.

Bolt d’Oro is the fifth G1 winner of the year for Medaglia d’Oro, more than any other sire in North America. In addition to the Del Mar Futurity winner, Medaglia d’Oro is the sire of 2017 G1 winners Songbird, Dickinson, New Money Honey, and Elate.

Medaglia d’Oro will stand the 2017 breeding season at Kelvinside for a fee of $110,000 inc GST.
