Records tumble at Inglis Easter yearling sale

Medaglia d'Oro filly sets new benchmark for her sire

Day one of the 2015 Inglis Easter yearling sale in Sydney saw a record price for a Medaglia d'Oro yearling sold at auction in Australia achieved with lot 178, a filly out of American G2-winning mare Sherine, selling to Inglis as agent for $550,000.

Bred by Rick Jamieson at Gilgai Farm, who also bred undefeated Champion mare Black Caviar, the filly was consigned by Segenhoe Stud. She was one of four Medaglia d’Oro yearlings to go through the ring on the opening day and competition was strong on all four.

Gai Waterhouse, who trains Medaglia d’Oro’s Golden Slipper-winning son Vancouver, went to $460,000 for lot 58, a half-brother to G1 performer Anjaal (Lonhro). Medaglia d’Oro's other two offerings, lots 73 and 112, sold for $350,000 and $450,000 respectively.

Exceed And Excel finished day one with an average of $362,143 for his seven yearlings sold. His top-priced lot was the Segenhoe Stud-consigned filly out of Radharcnafarraige, a G3 winner in Ireland. Sold as lot 124, the filly was purchased by bloodstock agent James Harron for $650,000.

Another daughter of Exceed And Excel, lot 102 from the Broadwater Thoroughbreds draft was also keenly sought after. Out of city-winning Dehere mare Perfect Hostess, the powerfully-built filly sold to Vinery Stud for $600,000.

As always, the progeny of Lonhro caught the attention of buyers with his top price of $340,000 coming for lot 23, a half-sister to G1 WA Derby winner Dreamaway.

The sale continues tomorrow.
