Velvet Mood smooth winner of My Dear Stakes

Daughter of Lonhro earns first Stakes win in just third career start

Velvet Mood moved to the lead with just over a furlong to run and fought off the late challenge of Stormy Perfection to win the My Dear Stakes at Woodbine Racecourse July 23.

Settled in a stalking position just behind the early leaders, the two-year-old daughter of Lonhro moved into contention on the far turn. As the fillies entered the homestretch, Velvet Mood overtook the pacemaker White Tights and took a slight lead. She then held off the late charge of Stormy Perfection to win by a head.

Velvet Mood remains undefeated in three career starts. She was bred in Kentucky by Siena Farms LLC, and is out of the mare Zayanna, a daughter of Champion Bernardini. Zayanna is a half-sister to G3 Wilshire Handicap winner Heavenly Ransom, G3 Daytona Stakes winner Dilemma, and multiple Graded Stakes-placed Capitano.

Champion racehorse and sire Lonhro has sired over 60 career Stakes winners, including G1-winners and fellow Darley stallions Exosphere and Denman. Lonhro’s newest G1 winner is the talented The Conglomerate, winner of South Africa’s prestigious Durban July at Greyville earlier this month.

Lonhro will stand the coming breeding season at Kelvinside at a fee of $88,000 inc. GST.
