Third G1 winner for Reset

Fawkner storms to brilliant win in G1 Caulfield Cup

Reset gelding Fawkner became the third G1 winner for his sire with a brilliant win in the G1 Caulfield Cup over 2400m, October 19.

Set for the race 11 months ago after running second in the G1 Emirates Stakes over 1600m, Fawkner was being tested at 2400m for the first time in the Caulfield Cup. The six-year-old relished the extra distance, powering home from back in the field for a dominant win under the guidance of jockey Nick Hall.

Previously a G3 winner, the Caulfield Cup win was Fawkner’s ninth in 20 career starts and took his earnings beyond $2.2million.

Bred by Steve Bennetts, Fawkner is the second foal of G3-winning and G1-placed Danewin mare Dane Belltar whose three other foals to race are G2 winner Tanby, G2-placed Viking Star and five-time winner Revitalise. Dane Belltar foaled a New Approach filly last month and this week tested in foal to Street Cry.

It was also at Caulfield where Reset enjoyed one of his greatest days on the racetrack, defeating the older horses as a three-year-old in the G1 Futurity Stakes over 1400m in 2004.

Fawkner joins Pinker Pinker and Rebel Raider as G1 winners by the undefeated Reset, the trio winning three of Australia’s premier races between them, the G1 Cox Plate (Pinker Pinker), the G1 Victoria Derby (Rebel Raider) and now the Caulfield Cup.

The sire of 24 Stakes winners, Reset has been Victoria’s leading stallion by Stakes winners the past three racing seasons. He is standing this season at Northwood Park at a fee of $16,500 inc. GST.
