The sweet smell of success

Authorized’s Sugar Boy romps to a six-and-a-half-length victory in the Eyrefield Stakes at Leopardstown

Authorized has enjoyed a very successful European campaign in 2012, with the best ratio of three-year-old winners of any major sire in Europe and plenty of juvenile success to boot. On 4 November, his two-year-old son Sugar Boy took his first Stakes race in emphatic style, winning the Listed Eyrefield Stakes by no fewer than six and a half lengths.

Racing widest of all under a canny ride from jockey Chris Hayes, Sugar Boy took the lead approaching the home straight and eased clear two furlongs out and having opened up a huge winning margin, was eased down crossing the line.

This was his third consecutive win and trainer Kevin Prendergast indicated that he will now be put away for the season and will be aimed at one of the Derby trials next year.

Bred by Grange Con Stud, Sugar Boy is out of the G3 winner Steel Princess, making him a half-brother to G1 Canadian International winner Sarah Lynx.

He becomes the third juvenile Black type performer this year for Authorized, who is also sire of promising G2 colt Tenenbaum, Chalice Stakes winner Ambivalent, plus dual Listed-winning two-year-old Castello Aragonese.
