Star Three-year-old Exosphere with ease

G1 Golden Rose-winning Lonhro colt wins G2 Roman Consul Stakes

A winner of the G1 Golden Rose last time out, Lonhro’s star three-year-old son Exosphere appeared even more impressive, capturing the G2 Roman Consul Stakes by three-and-a-quarter lengths at Royal Randwick.

The drop back from the 1400m of the Golden Rose to the 1200m on Saturday posed no issue for the imposing colt as he settled in second last position before charging down the outside of the field to claim his fifth win and fourth at Stakes level.

Set to head towards the G1 Coolmore Stud Stakes, a race won last year by Darley’s first-season sire Brazen Beau and in 2011 by Sepoy, Exosphere appears to have the race at his mercy at this stage.

Jockey James McDonald could not hide his high opinion of the colt post-race.

“This is what we wake up and dream about, horses like these,” McDonald said.

“He is a superstar this thing."

“He is well up there with the best of them. He has an incredible turn-of-foot and the world is his oyster.”

Exosphere, bred by Darley in Australia, is the second foal to race from metropolitan-winning Danzero mare Altitude.

The sire of seven G1 winners, Lonhro stands at Kelvinside at a fee of $88,000 inc. GST alongside two of his G1-winning sons in Denman ($27,500 inc. GST) and Benfica ($5,500 inc. GST).
