Star foals arrive at Darley

With the first foals hitting the ground at Darley, we make special note of the possible stars of tomorrow

Foaled during the final hours of the last day of July, Lonhro mare Sangfroid was responsible for the first arrival at Darley this season. Bred to Champion three-year-old Bernardini during her first season at stud, the resultant bay colt has the blood of some of the leading stallions in both hemispheres running through her veins.

Sangfroid is a three-quarter-sister to G1-winning three-year-old Denman and comes from the family of Stakes-winning Canny Lad mares Preserve and Rio Osa, as well as G2-winning Commands gelding Soul. While Bernardini is responsible for seven G1-performers from his first two crops to race, highlighted by G1 winners A. Z. Warrior and Biondetti, as well as the recent G2 Jim Dandy Stakes winner Stay Thirsty.

A few days later, Elusive Quality's Stakes-performing daughter Melpomene produced her first foal (pictured), a cracking filly from the first southern hemisphere-bred crop of sire-sensation Medaglia d’Oro. A half-sister to the G3 Skyline Stakes placegetter Romanus, Melpomene is a daughter of G1 VRC Oaks winner Bulla Borghese.

A successful young sire, Medaglia d'Oro has produced seven G1 winners including the exceptional Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra, Kentucky Oaks winner Plum Pretty, as well as C. S. Silk, Passion For Gold, Champagne d’Oro, Gabby’s Golden Gal and Warrior’s Reward.

On the very same day, G2 Magic Night Stakes winner Portillo produced her second foal, a bay filly by the globally acclaimed Street Cry. Finishing third behind Sebring and Darley’s own Von Costa de Hero in the G1 Golden Slipper of her year, Portillo produced an Exceed And Excel filly during her first season at stud.

Street Cry is set to once again cover an exceptional book of mares this season, carrying on from the stellar book of mares he covered last season which included G1-winning mares Black Mamba, Bramble Rose, Elegant Fashion, Miss Finland, Mnemosyne, Piavonic, Private Steer, Regal Cheer and Rewaaya.

Bernardini, Medaglia d’Oro and Street Cry will join the recently crowned Champion sire Lonhro at Darley Kelvinside this year at a fee of $38,500 (inc GST), $77,000 (inc GST), $110,000 (inc GST) and $77,000 (inc GST) respectively.
