Son of Exceed And Excel proves too hot for his rivals

Thermal Current wins G3 DC McKay Stakes at Morphettville

Thermal Current, a son of Exceed And Excel, recorded his second G3 victory with a comfortable win in the DC McKay Stakes at Morphettville, May 2.

Jockey Dwayne Dunn was able to overcome an awkward barrier draw within the first furlong of the 1100m race as he crossed down to the rail behind the two leaders. Thermal Current strode to the lead shortly after straightening for the run home and went on to post a dominant one-length victory.

A homebred for David and Jenny Moodie’s Contract Racing Pty Ltd, Thermal Current is out of Stakes-winning Twining mare Soaressa, a half-sister to Listed winners Assertive Eagle and Impressive Eagle.

On the verge of once again being crowned Australia’s Champion two-year-old sire, Exceed And Excel is the sire of nine G1 winners including record-breaking Caulfield Guineas winner and fellow Darley stallion Helmet, as well as four-time G1 winner Guelph, Golden Slipper winner Overreach and Blue Diamond Stakes winners Earthquake and Reward For Effort.

Exceed And Excel will be joined on the Kelvinside roster in the coming breeding season by his multiple G2-winning son Sidestep who was the Champion two-year-old colt of his generation. Exceed And Excel will stand at a fee of $110,000 inc. GST, while Sidestep’s fee is $11,000 inc. GST. Helmet ($33,000 inc. GST) will stand at Northwood Park alongside another G2-winning son of Exceed And Excel in Kuroshio ($11,000 inc. GST).
