Impressive victory for Boban

Bernardini colt becomes second southern hemisphere winner for his sire

After surviving a protest, well-bred Bernardini colt Boban recorded a one-and-a-half length victory over 1400m on the Sandown Lakeside course on March 4.

Settling in last position, the Anthony Freedman-trained colt pushed out rounding the home turn, showing a tremendous turn of foot to reach the lead, and kept going to record an impressive victory at his third start.

Out of the G1 AJC Oaks winner Kenbelle, Boban was bred by Mr AB Thomas and Mrs R R Thomas of Queensland. Kenbelle currently has a weanling filly by the unbeaten multiple G1 winner Teofilo and was covered by the Champion European three-year-old Authorized in the latest breeding season.

The sire of a remarkable eight G1 horse and four G1 winners from his first northern hemisphere crops highlighted by To Honor And Serve, Stay Thirsty, A.Z. Warrior and Biondetti, Bernradini has sired two winners to date in the southern hemisphere with the other being the G2 performer Meidung.

Bernardini will be represented by 21 yearlings catalogued for the forthcoming Inglis Easter yearling sale highlighted by lot 131, the third foal out of the G1 AJC Oaks winner Dizelle, a half-sister to Champion Hong Kong galloper Vengeance Of Rain consigned by Yarraman Park Stud (as agent). Another highlight is sure to be lot 236, a bay filly out of the Canadian-bred mare Ladies’ Day. Consigned by Sledmere Stud (as agent), this filly is a half-brother to the G1 Dubai Rosehill Guineas winner He’s No Pie Eater (Canny Lad) and is from the family of G1 winners Redoute’s Choice, Umatilla, Hurricane Sky and Platinum Scissors.
