G3-placed Sepoy filly scores impressive first-up win

Chipanda shows her class in maiden victory

G3-placed Sepoy filly, Chipanda, showed a brilliant display of speed to break her maiden in the Les Carlyon Two-year-old Plate over 1200m at Rosehill, 21 May.

First-up after a spell, the promising filly travelled comfortably throughout for jockey Brenton Avdulla but ran into trouble upon turning for home when she was unable to pursue an open gap. Shifting clear to an inside alley, Chipanda showed blistering speed to win by half a length from race favourite Legerity and Argie Bargie.

A Darley homebred, Chipanda showed encouraging signs in her first preparation when finishing third in the G3 Widden Stakes over 1100m earlier this year. Her dam, Anabaa mare Lobola, has also produced Stakes winners Handfast and Rusambo and foaled a Sepoy brother to Chipanda last spring.

Chipanda is the fourth winner for Sepoy, joining the Stakes-placed winner She’s Positive, Giroux and recent European winner Kilmah.

Sepoy will stand at Kelvinside Stud this coming breeding season at a fee of $33,000 inc. GST.
