Darley stallions well represented at Karaka

Next week's Karaka Premier yearling sale features several impressive Darley-sired youngsters

Having sired the winner of last year’s Karaka Million in Ruud Awakening, who also claimed the G1 Diamond Stakes, Bernardini has four yearlings catalogued for next week’s Karaka Premier yearling sale.

With G1 Epsom Handicap-Emirates Stakes winner Boban also starring for Bernardini, the four yearlings are expected to be in high demand. Wentwood Grange’s Bernardini colt catalogued as lot 360 is expected to be popular given he is out of the Listed winner Anne Carina, while lot 257 is a Bernardini colt out of Stakes winner Smitten Kitten consigned by Valachi Downs.

Lonhro has arguably the best three-year-old filly in New Zealand in Bounding who defeated the older horses in the G1 Railway Stakes on New Year’s day and he is represented by three yearlings at Karaka including Cambridge Stud’s lot 279, a half-sister to Stakes performer Moreton Bay. A Lonhro granddaughter of G1 winner Stella Cadente will be sold by Trelawney Stud as lot 390 and will also have plenty of admirers.

Lonhro’s G1-winning son Denman has made a spectacular start to his stud career and his one entrant at Karaka is lot 381, a colt out of G2-winning Zeditave mare Belle Femme.

Exceed And Excel is Darley’s most heavily represented stallion at Karaka with eight yearlings catalogued. Among them is the first foal of G1 winner Miss Raggedy Ann who will be sold as lot 138 by Wentwood Grange, while Stakes winning juvenile She’s Got Gears has her first foal, an Exceed And Excel filly, catalogued as lot 246 for Ascot Farm.

Commands has four lots catalogued including lot 293. Consigned by Hanui Farm, the colt is the first foal of Stakes-winning Lonhro mare Tampiko.

His yearlings sold up to $260,000 at Karaka last year and Teofilo has just one yearling to go under the hammer at Karaka this year but it is expected to create plenty of interest. Consigned by Trelawney Stud as lot 96, the colt is out G2 winner and G1-placed La Sizeranne, making him a half-brother to Street Cry’s Stakes-winning juvenile Za Moulin Rouge.

The two-day Karaka Premier Sale begins on Sunday and the catlogue can be viewed here.
